Most of us have Easter Traditions. Mine is painting Easter eggs for my entire life!.... except the first few years! ;)
My youngest came home from university to celebrate Easter with us. We both love this particular holiday because it involves less fuzzing than lets say Christmas, but with spring starting outside it is always cheery and fun. A tradition for us is that we paint eggs the Saturday before Easter. I grew up doing the same thing in my family.
My family is extended. We are 5 girls in my family and I also have many uncles, aunties and cousins. My family lives on the family farm and Easter was one of those holidays that family would come around to visit. So a serious amount of eggs needed to be painted and my mum preparing all the food and other goodies that go with such a holiday was quite glad that a bunch of her girls just loved painting the eggs. There were some special wax crayons originating from my dad's family and the easter egg paint that comes in a pill shape and little stickers. We loved the bold colours from the Easter egg paint, but combined with the wax crayons the results became way more interesting. Gathered around a the large kitchen table, what would start out as a serious undertaking would within an hour or so result in a big competition for the ugliest egg, the brightest egg, the most creative egg, etc. And we could not stop laughing and cheering. I think you can probably envisage how a party like that with several kids varying in age from 4 to 10 would look like. In my rearview mirror it equalled just plain fun and happiness. In my mum's probably despair looking at the gigantic mess on the table! However we were all (including my mum) always pleased with the eggs. As we grew older a few of my sisters became less interested but with a couple we kept going. Oh my, it was so much fun. There was always something going on around easter that could be incorporated in the egg designs and the endless chatting and joking was out of this world.
Now for the last 18 years or so I am doing it with my kids. One has no interest anymore but for the other it is still one of the special events that we do together each year. Being both creative we like to experiment and every year comes with slightly different approaches. We had many themes going around and just as many good laughs. We now paint them with acrylic paint and there were bunnies, superheroes, granates, mice, flowers, animals, paper cranes etc, etc. Etc. Of course the cracking on Easter Sunday is the most fun. Who can keep his egg un-cracked the longest! A fierce competition. Always brings back the memory of one of my uncles who went around with a .... painted plaster egg and only confessed to it when he became the Easter king of the family! I know it is cheating but it also made for many many laughs, even after so many years. Aren't those traditions sweet! I hope you have some of your own too and if not it is never to late to start one!
I wish you all a happy Easter
